AMACO’s recent glaze innovation 'Kiln Ice' blends ancient inspiration with modern materials to create crackle or crazing effect surface in soft tones. Kiln Ice glazes draw from the beauty of Guan Ware, a revered ceramic tradition from China celebrated for their delicate crackled surfaces—an effect that Kiln Ice glazes reinterpret.
Kiln Ice semi-translucent finish.
Kiln Ice glazes are known for being semi-translucent , allowing the underlying clay body and textures to show through. As the glaze cools, the crackle lines become slightly opaque, producing a striking contrast that resemble frozen landscapes and fractured ice.

How to Use Kiln Ice Glazes:
To achieve the best results, a few key techniques are essential:
- Application: Apply 3–4 generous coats to bisque-fired ware.
- Firing Range: Fire to cone 5–6 (mid-range temperatures)
- Layer Thickness Matters: Thicker applications produce larger, more dramatic crackle patterns, while thinner coats yield finer lines.
The clay body you choose will also play a role. Darker clays—especially brown or buff varieties—tend to enhance the crackle effect and create more contrast than light clay. While Kiln Ice glazes are labelled as food safe, they are not recommended for food-contact surfaces due to their textured, crackled finish, which may affect long-term durability.
AMACO’s Kiln Ice glazes are more than just a surface treatment, whether you're crafting sculptural forms or decorative pieces, Kiln Ice glazes open the door to a world of icy elegance and creative exploration.
