KILN LID COAT
Kiln lid coating is used to protect and maintain the surface of a kiln's lid, especially in ceramic or pottery kilns. It helps prevent spalling (flaking of the kiln lid), improves the insulation, and extends the lifespan of the lid. Here’s how to apply kiln lid coat properly:
Materials Needed:
- Kiln lid coating (specifically designed for kilns)
- Soft brush or roller
- Spray bottle of water (optional, for thinning)
- Safety gear (gloves, mask, and eye protection)
- Sandpaper or a smoothing tool (optional, for surface prep)
Safety First:
Wear gloves, a mask, and protective eyewear, as kiln lid coatings may contain particles that are harmful to inhale or may irritate the skin.
Prepare the Kiln Lid:
Make sure the kiln is completely cool and unplugged before working.
Clean the surface of the kiln lid to remove any loose debris, dust, or flaking. Use a vacuum, soft brush, or compressed air to get rid of any loose particles.
Smooth the Surface (if necessary):
If there are rough areas or significant spalling on the kiln lid, gently sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth, even surface for the coating to adhere to.
Mix the Lid Coating:
The lid coating is premixed however some separation may have occurred. A small amount of water may be required to achieve the right consistency.
It should be slightly runny, but not too watery, so it can spread evenly.
Apply the First Coat:
Use a soft brush or roller to apply a thin, even layer of the kiln lid coating. Start from one side and work your way across to cover the entire surface of the lid.
Make sure the coat is smooth and consistent to avoid creating thick spots or drips. If necessary, the lid coat can be thinned slightly with water by misting it lightly with a spray bottle as you apply it.
Let It Dry:
Allow the first coat to dry thoroughly, usually for about 12-24 hours, depending on the humidity levels. The lid should feel dry and firm to the touch before you apply additional coats.
Apply Additional Coats (if needed):
For added durability, you can apply 2-3 thin coats of the lid coating. Allow each layer to dry completely before applying the next one.
Final Drying:
Once all coats are applied, let the kiln lid cure completely for at least 24 hours, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
Firing the Kiln:
Slowly heat the kiln after the coating has fully dried to help cure the coating and strengthen the repair. Gradually increase the kiln's temperature to prevent cracking or bubbling.
Tips:
1. Apply thin, even coats for the best results. Thick coats may crack during firing.
2. If the lid coating bubbles or cracks, it may have been applied too thickly or the kiln may have been fired too quickly.
3. Some manufacturers recommend lightly sanding between coats for an ultra-smooth finish.
Regular application of kiln lid coating will help maintain the lid’s integrity and prolong the life of your kiln.
