Orton Junior Pyrometric Cone 6

An Orton SRB Pyrometric Junior Cone is a Small Regular Base (SRB) pyrometric cone designed to measure heatwork (the combined effect of temperature and time) in kiln firings. These cones are shorter than standard Large Regular Base (LRB) cones, making them ideal for small kilns, test firings, and controlled laboratory applications.

Key Features:

  • Small Regular Base (SRB) Design – Compact size, requiring less space inside the kiln.
  • Accurate Heatwork Monitoring – Measures the true effect of heat over time, ensuring proper glaze and clay maturation.
  • Ideal for Small Kilns & Test Firings – Perfect for hobbyists, schools, and laboratory use.
  • Available in Multiple Cone Numbers – Ranges from low-fire to high-fire ceramics.
  • Visual Heatwork Indicator – Bends at a specific temperature to indicate when the correct amount of heat has been absorbed.

How to Use an Orton SRB Junior Cone:

  1. Position the Cone – Place it in an Orton 3-Hole Plaque or a suitable holder inside the kiln.
  2. Monitor the Firing – As the kiln reaches its designated heatwork level, the cone will begin to bend.
  3. Analyze the Results
    • A properly fired cone bends to 90 degrees (tip touching the base).
    • If the cone is too upright, the firing was under-fired.
    • If it bends too much or collapses, the firing was over-fired.

Common Applications:

  • Ceramic & Pottery Studios – Ensures accurate firings for glazes and clay bodies.
  • Educational & Research Labs – Used in small-scale and experimental firings.
  • Quality Control – Helps maintain consistency in industrial ceramic processes.
