The range of Raku glazes from Mayco are designed to develop beautiful metallic lusters and crackle patterns when fired according to raku firing processes.

RK-100 Black Metallic glaze creates a highly reflective, dark metallic finish following a proper Raku Firing.

Firing Range: Cone 06

General Use / Application Instructions:

  1. Shake for 5-6 seconds before use.
  2. Stir well.
  3. Apply 3 coats to bisqueware.
    • Use of a thermal shock-resistant raku clay body will help reduce the incidence of cracking.
    • Do not glaze inside or bottom of ware.
    • Thinner coats tend to produce greater metallic effects.
    • If you are not getting the desired metallic results you can adjust your glaze application.
  4. Allow to dry thoroughly.
  5. Fire to cone 06 (1850°F, 1010°C) and hold for 5 minutes.
  6. Remove ware from kiln with tongs. If using an electric kiln make sure power is off, and allow to cool.
  7. Place ware into metal lidded container with combustible materials.
  8. Place lid on immediately to reduce oxygen.
  9. The combustible materials will produce flames and smoke.
  10. Leave in container until cool, approximately 20 minutes and remove.
  11. After ware has completely cooled use water and a scouring pad to clean.

Food Safety: Raku glazes are not recommended for dinnerware due to the durability of the fired glaze are recommended for ornamental use only.

Tips:

  • Minimizing the distance between the kiln and the reduction container can improve the development of metallic colours.
  • Cleaning will improve the luster and colours in the fired finish. Actual fired results will vary according to choice of clay.
  • Raku glazes will not produce the same results in a typical electric firing as they must encounter a raku environment.
  • Due to the unpredictable nature of this firing technique, results will vary with every firing.
  • Mayco's range of Fundamentals Underglazes can be used to put a background colour down before burnishing and applying horsehair or feathers in a raku firing.
