Mayco Stoneware EG006 Sparkle Black Engobe 473ml
Mayco's new Stoneware Engobes (also commonly referred to as Underglazes) are used to coat your clay body to your preferred finish/colour and are a great base to achieve variability in your glaze results. The sparkle black engobe fires matte with matellic specks. Specks may produce texture.
Ideal for decorative techniques, such as sgraffito and majolica. Engobes change the colour of your clay surface without cross contamination and make for easy clean up in your studio.
Mayco Engobes fire matte, and a clear glaze can be applied to intensify the colour or make your piece suitable for dinnerware.
Cone 6 oxidation: Black Engobe fires matte blackwith metallic specks. Specks may produce texture. Highly stable.
Cone 10 reduction: No change to base colour. Specks bloom and become matte. Remains stable.
Firing Range: Cone 5-10
Food Safety: AP Certified. Due to surface durability or texture of the fired surface, Engobes must be coated in a food safe clear glaze according to manufacturer’s directions to be considered dinnerware safe.

Application Instructions
- Shake or stir well
- Apply to wet clay, greenware or soft fired, cone 04 bisque.
- Brush on 2-3 smooth, even coats (1 coat if dipping or spraying)
- Fire to shelf Cone 5-6. Will perform well at cone 9-10.
Tips
- To enhance the sparkle and improve texture, use your fingers to burnish/polish the surface of the ware before the last layer is dry. Polishing is not needed when used in combination.
- Can be applied to wet clay, greenware or soft fired, cone 04 bisque.
- Engobes are often used for a variety of decorative techniques, such as sgraffito and majolica.
- Fires matte. Apply clear glaze (SW004) Zinc-Free Clear to intensify colour or for use on dinnerware.
- SW004 Zinc-Free Clear is recommended for a black finish. SW001 Stoneware Clear will change the colour to a rich brown and affect the sparkle.
- Engobes will impact glaze results when used as a base. Engobes are used to change the colour of your clay colour surface without cross contamination and easy clean up in your studio.
- Can be used in oxidation or reduction firings. Results may vary.
- The choice of clay body, thickness of application, firing process, and temperature will greatly affect the fired results. Always test your application on your clay body in your kiln environment.
