A Pyrometric Bar Cone is a specially shaped rectangular pyrometric device used to measure heatwork (the combined effect of temperature and time) inside a kiln. Unlike traditional self-supporting or large base (LRB) pyrometric cones, bar cones are designed primarily for use in automated kiln shutoff systems, such as the Orton Kiln Sitter.

- As the kiln heats up, the bar cone softens and bends downward under its own weight.
- When it bends enough, it triggers the kiln sitter’s release mechanism, shutting off the kiln at the correct heatwork level.
This ensures that the kiln does not overfire, protecting ceramics and glazes from defects due to excessive heat exposure.
