Orton Pyrometric Bar Cone 021

A Pyrometric Bar Cone is a specially shaped rectangular pyrometric device used to measure heatwork (the combined effect of temperature and time) inside a kiln. Unlike traditional self-supporting or large base (LRB) pyrometric cones, bar cones are designed primarily for use in automated kiln shutoff systems, such as the Orton Kiln Sitter.

Key Features of Pyrometric Bar Cones:
  • Flat, Rectangular Shape – Designed for use in kiln sitters, where it bends and triggers an automatic shutoff mechanism.
  • Precise Heatwork Control – Ensures accurate firings by responding to both temperature and duration.
  • Reliable Kiln Shutoff – As the kiln reaches the correct temperature, the bar cone softens and bends, allowing the kiln sitter to shut off the kiln at the right time.
  • Consistent Results – Used in pottery, ceramics, and industrial kilns to maintain proper glaze and clay maturation.
  • Different Temperature Ranges – Available in various cone numbers to match different firing needs (e.g., Cone 06 for low-fire, Cone 6 for mid-fire, Cone 10 for high-fire).
How It Works in a Kiln Sitter:
  1. The Pyrometric Bar Cone is placed inside the kiln sitter, resting on two Cone Supports.
  2. As the kiln heats up, the bar cone softens and bends downward under its own weight.
  3. When it bends enough, it triggers the kiln sitter’s release mechanism, shutting off the kiln at the correct heatwork level.

This ensures that the kiln does not overfire, protecting ceramics and glazes from defects due to excessive heat exposure.
